1991 - Long load, short trip

A 96-wheel trailer made a slow five kilometre trip to our plant last month to deliver a very long load. Resting on it was almost 100 tonnes of fabricated steel in the form of a barrel reclaimer. Fabricated for our ironmaking department by WGE Group workshops on Five Islands Road, Unanderra, the reclaimer section will form part of our raw materials handling system. Almost the length of an Olympic size swimming pool and taking up two landes of the road the $1.5 million reclaimer was transported on a special platform trailer hired from Sydney. Higher than some of the overhead wires, its transportation from shop to site was a tricky one which required the assistance of the Illawarra County Council, and a police escort. Project Manager, Malcolm Newton, said the reclaimer was probably the largest object ever to move along Five Islands and Springhill Roads.
